Large Rise in Austin-area Joblessness
Saturday, March 12th, 2011There is a large rise in Austin-area joblessness based on numbers released on Thursday through the Texas Workforce Commission. The gain of 44,100 jobs and internship positions was the biggest since May, based on a commissions figures. Angelina County’s joblessness numbers also rose from 7.6 percent to 8.2 percent from December to January. The unemployed rate, calculated through the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, continues to be above 7 percent in 16 of the last 17 months. November to December rates saw a small decline, said town of Lufkin’s Economic Development director Jim Wehmeier last month, citing larger industries getting additional employees like a reason behind the decrease. “Employers continued to grow their work forces in January once we saw hiring across most Texas industries,” Commission Chairman Tom Pauken said. Texas’ unemployment rate in January remained at 8.3 for that second straight month, based on the Texas Workforce Commission. The only real industry to get rid of jobs in January was leisure and hospitality, which shed 3,800 positions. In December, joblessness was down. Texas’ joblessness rate remains well below the nation’s rate, which stood at 9 percent in January.
