Two Hundred Thousand Hours in Our Beds?
Sunday, March 13th, 2011If we follow the guidelines that we need on average 8 hours of sleep each night, that’s a third of every 24 hours we spend asleep and making the assumption that we sleep in our beds that’s almost a third of our lives we spend in our bed, and that’s just asleep. If we assume that the average lifetime is 70 years, that’s 613,608 hours, which means over the course of a lifetime most people will spend 200,000 hours or more in bed!
Ok some of us may sleep less, so maybe a quarter of our lives we spend in our beds and some may sleep more, maybe there are some who spend half their lives asleep – if not the whole time in their beds certainly more than a third of it.
That’s a lot of time and a large proportion of our lives that we spend in bed. Then if you factor in all the other activities we do in bed… reading, breakfast in bed, resting, sex, watching tv or films and so on – we spend a lot of time in bed. Not only is it important for our health and general wellbeing that we get a good nights rest – we’ve all had those horrible sleepless nights, tossing and turning and then felt grumpy the next day – but to look after our spine we must ensure that we have we have a comfortable, firm and supportive high quality bed.

It’s a shame that more freshmen don’t try their hand at decorating their rooms. When else will you ever get the chance to go crazy with psychedelic decor, fairy lights strung up over your bed, a Sesame Street beer cooler at the foot–you can go wherever your imagination takes you. Bear in mind, you’ll have all the time in the world to be grownup and sane once you’ve settled down (horrors!). This is the time to let it all hang out, and we’re going to begin with that college shabby chic bedding of yours.
The easiest thing do when you go to purchase duvet cover bedding is to buy white. Your dorm room is hardly the place for white though. A bed in a dorm room is a lounging area; there are usually no chairs for your friends who come around and everyone’s going to be on your bed with their sneakers on; they will be dropping pizza crumbs all over the place (not to mention whatever stains might result from unmentionable activities). White sheets will not do the job; go for the darker colors with lots of patterns to deceive the eye into thinking that any stain you work into the fabric is actually part of the design.
As a whole, college students aren’t known for their inclination toward cleanliness; in other words, college bedding does not get washed nearly as often as it should. It would be a good idea then to buy at least a half-dozen sets to begin with. Then at least you’re accepting your weakness and doing something about it. So if your dorm mattress is as hard as a countertop, all you need to do is slap a memory foam pad on top, and you’ll be sleeping like a baby.
If your tastes in full size bedding run, shall we say, to the elegant, there are plenty of high-end designer names in the college bedding market that would be perfect for you. Tommy Hilfiger has a Campus Kit that goes for about $100. Isaac Mizrahi is another designer name in the business. Of course, no matter what you pick out, your roommate might give you grief over your choices. What do you do if roommate has a taste that runs to the Gothic? You do need to work things out, but who knows, the roommate might secretly admire your really attractive stuff. Don’t be surprised if you come in someday to find her (or him) curled up under your fine sheets, hugging your full-length comforter.

Sanctuary is a Place Called Home
Saturday, September 18th, 2010A home is really more than a house. Home is where you lay claim to a bit of space you can call your own. My own home is a suburban, brick ranch house, located on about 1/3 of an acre of land. It isn’t decorated in a professional style, but contains colors and items that have meaning for me, and gives me great views via our juliette balconies.
Our lot has four or five large maple trees and two flower gardens. There is a small deck overlooking the gardens. The house has a family room, where we watch television and a living room, in which I read. The living room is like a sanctuary from the outside world. I always feel grateful to have this space. The home has three bedrooms. They are on the small side, but provide a place for our adult children to come “home” to. There is one and a half bathrooms, a small dining room and a small kitchen. The kitchen is too small to serve as a gathering place for family. Generally, we entertain in our family room, where we can watch movies or play Wii. To an outside observer, it looks like any middle class home. To me, it serves as a nest or a sanctuary from all the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
