Is a Waterproof Mattress Pad Necessary?

It’s a good idea, even if the waterproof mattress pad you select is leak-proof, as mattresses with a vinyl cover will be. Some cloth-covered mattresses are leak proof as well if they have a plastic (polyurethane) coating. To be sure, check the label on cloth-covered mattresses for key words such as “leak-proof” or “waterproof.” The coating may be on the underside of the cloth, not next to a baby’s skin.

A waterproof mattress pad on a vinyl-covered mattress will make your baby’s sleeping surface cozier. Without it, the chill of the mattress’s vinyl is apt to come through, no matter what the thread count of the fitted sheet. For cloth-covered mat­tresses with underside waterproofing, a waterproof pad will protect the top cloth surface of the mattress from diaper leaks and stains; it will also absorb the liquid and wick it away from your baby’s skin.

If the mattress cover hasn’t been waterproofed (which is often the case with natural crib mattresses, discussed in detail below), a waterproof mattress pad is a must to prevent fluids from reaching and staining the mattress cover and seeping into the core of the mattress, helping to prevent bacterial growth.

Should your baby’s vinyl or water­proofed cloth-covered mattress get wet or soiled, spot-clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap to reduce the likelihood that bacteria will fester on the mattress cover.
